PORTLAND STATE AWARDED 4,515 degrees—the most ever—for the 2005-06 academic year. This marks the 11th consecutive year of growth in the University's graduating class.
This past year students earned 3,050 bachelor's degrees, 1,425 master's degrees, and 40 doctoral degrees. Fortunately, they did not all attend the spring ceremony in the Rose Garden Arena. In June, nearly 1,800 grads received their diplomas in front of 14,000 friends and family.
At spring commencement Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio gave the main address and helped present service awards to professors Stan Hillman, Mary Ellen Kenreich, and M. Aslam Khan Khalil, and administrator Clevonne Jackson. DeFazio received an honorary doctorate of humane letters, along with Norman Leyden, retired Oregon Symphony associate conductor, and Fred Rosenbaum '75, Oregon business leader.
