AN INTERACTIVE WEB site that allows elementary and middle school children to create sustainability projects won a $75,000 grant as part of the Environmental Protection Agency's People, Prosperity, and Planet award. Graduate School of Education students, who developed the Web site, will use the money for the next phase--awarding mini-grants to schools to implement the projects.
BY SERVING STUDENTS sustainable-sourced foods, the University's dining service provider, Sodexho, won a BEST (Business for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow) Award from the city of Portland's Office of Sustainable Development.
THE NEW ENGINEERING building in PSU's Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology was awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification. The building features natural lighting, natural ventilation of its five-story atrium, a rainwater harvesting system that supplies water for toilets, and geothermal heating and cooling from underground springs.
PORTLAND STATE IS the nation's first "Salmon Safe" university campus. Salmon-Safe, a Portland-based nonprofit, certified the campus for integrating environmentally conscious practices into its teaching, research, new buildings, and facilities management.
