REIL - Degree Requirements

**Because the REIL certificate is to be put on hiatus at the end of spring quarter, applications for the program are no longer being accepted.

REIL Certificate - Degree Requirements

Minimum Grade of C

Each REIL Certificate course must be completed with a grade of C or above.

No credit for C-minus grades.

Course taken using the Pass/No-Pass grading option cannot be used to fulfill REIL Certificate requirements.

     If a student receives a grade of C-minus or below in a required REIL courses, he/she must re-take the course until a grade of C or above has been earned.

     If a student receives a grade of C-minus or below in elective courses in the REIL Certificate program, the student may choose to take a different elective class in order to earn the elective credit.

GPA - Course retakes

If a student retakes a course because of a low grade,

     both the old grade and the new grade will appear on the student's PSU transcript

     both grades are calculated in the student's total Grade Point Average.

 

REIL Certificate - Scope of Study

The REIL Certificate provides fundamental training of language revitalization, jointly offered by Department of Applied Linguistics and Native American Studies Program.  This interdisciplinary approach helps students understand community and language backgrounds in deeper and holistic manners.

Students will learn about causes of language loss and factors involved in language maintenance, and acquire skills for working with Native communities and organizations on language revitalization, including developing language materials and language assessment tools.

The REIL Certificate is designed to provide students with:

     - background linguistic and community knowledge

     - language acquisition/bilingualism theory

     - pedagogical skills

This training will enable graduates:

     - to prepare to work with Native communities and organizations on language revitalization

The academic requirements of the REIL Certificate provide:

      - an interdisciplinary foundation/training for language revitalization along with supervised field experience

LING 390 serves as the prerequisite to all other courses in the program and must be take first.

LING 4/510 - Special Topics

Courses numbered 410/510 are *special topics* courses. Their content and prerequisites will vary according to instructor and student interest.

     Please check the current course descriptions AND check with your advisor for more information.

     Your advisor can determine which program requirements a particular 4/510 course will satisfy.
