M.A. TESOL - When to take LING 511 Syntax and LING 512 Phonology
MATESOL degree requirements state that every MATESOL student complete *either* LING 511 Syntax *or* LING 512 Phonology . Students may chose to take both courses, according to interest.
Important Notes about tasks and content in Syntax and Phonology:
Both LING 511 Syntax and LING 512 Phonology involve significant amounts of linguistic analysis, argumentation, and theory developent.
Therefore, students have benefitted from taking Syntax or Phonology later in their MATESOL program, when stronger familiarity with terminology and analytical practice is firmly in place.
However, students with strong academic backgrounds, or those who need to acquire expertise in matters of Syntax or Phonology in order to develop a foundation for their Culminating Experience, may benefit from taking these demanding courses somewhat earlier in their program.
IMPORTANT TIMING NOTES:
The student's program of study should not allow either Syntax or Phonology during their absolute last term in the MATESOL program.
Why?
Syntax and Phonology are required courses.
Registration for these classes fills quickly.
It is possible that a student who is otherwise ready to finish their degree would not be able to register for Syntax or Phonology.
