M.A. TESOL - Required Graduate-only Credits

PSU policy states that an M.A. degree can only be granted if the student has completed at least 10 credits of graduate-only courses (i.e. not mixed 400/500).

The MATESOL degree meets PSU requirements via the following 500-only courses that are Required for the MATESOL degree:

  • LING 503 Thesis or LING 507 Project = 6 graduate-only credits
  • LING 560 Research Design = 2 graduate-only credits
  • LING 561 Research Methods = 2 graduate-only credits

No substitutions can be approved that would cause a student to have less than 10 grad-only credits.

All substitutions require the GO-12 form

If the advisor approves a course substitution, or if in any way a student's program of study looks unusual, the advisor should write a memo to accompany the student's GO-12.

A memo on the GO-12 will prevent delays in the case that the Grad Office is uncertain on how the student has fulfilled requirements.
