M.A. TESOL - LING 538 and LING 571 before TESOL Methods
Complete 538 Second Language Acquisition and 571 International Experience *before* beginning the TESOL Methods Sequence
LING 538 Second Language Acquisition provides students with a foundation in SLA theory and data analysis.
Students with weak academic backgrounds (especially research reading skills) may find that LING 538 requires very strong concentration.
The student with weak textual analysis skills, who enrolls in SLA during their very first term, may encounter a significant challenge. If this is you, stay in touch with your advisor, join a study group within the class, and expect to work hard. If you put in the effort, you will succeed.
Why?
- The Methods Sequence lectures, readings, and tasks presume that students are familiar with the basic theories and findings of contemporary Second Language Acquisition research..
LING 571 International Experience provides students with a foundation in ethnographic research and the general role of culture in language education.
Why?
- LING 571 provides the methodological foundation for continuing language-and-culture inquiry during the Methods Sequence
