M.A. TESOL - Grades

Minimum Grade of B

Each MATESOL course must be completed with a grade of B or above, in order to receive graduate credit from the Dept. of Applied Linguistics.

  • No credit for B-minus grades.

Course taken using the Pass/No-Pass grading option cannot be used to fulfill MATESOL requirements.

  • If a student receives a grade of B-minus or below in a required course, he/she must re-take the course until a grade of B or above has been earned.
  • If the course provides elective credit, the student may choose to take a different elective class in order to earn the elective credit.
GPA - Course retakes

If a student retakes a course because of a low grade,

  • both the old grade and the new grade will appear on the student's PSU transcript
  • both grades are calculated in the student's total Grade Point Average.
Passing Grade = C-minus, in foreign language requirement coursework only

Native speakers of English may choose to satisfy PSU's Master of Arts requirement for demonstrated proficiency in a language other than English, via completion of a 203-or-higher level of foreign language coursework.

The language requirement for Master of Arts degrees is imposed by Portland State University and not by the Department of Applied Linguistics. PSU accepts a passing grade of C-minus or better in coursework to satisfy theuniversity language requirement.

All MATESOL coursework required by the Dept. of Applied Linguistics must be completed with a grade of B or better.
