The Portland ESL Network was recently created to bridge the gap between potential ESL students and programs striving to help them. It offers several resources:

• a comprehensive map with locations of available ESL classes and tutoring;
• an ESL class price comparison chart;
• links to cultural resources and articles;
• a community cultural calendar; and
• on-line resources for students and teachers.

The best part is that the Portland ESL Network is a wiki, which means that it can be maintained and edited by the community. If you have ESL resources to share, you can create a free account and add or update information to share with everyone.

Applications are now being accepted for 2009-2010 worldwide teaching positions through the English Language Fellow program.

Administered for the U.S. State Dept. by Georgetown University, the ELF program provides one-year and renewable assignments in Africa, Asia, Europe, Central America and South America.

Positions include a modest salary, housing at local standard, most living costs, and some insurance. U.S. citizenship, and the MATESOL or equivalent MA-level diploma (in-hand by June-2009) are required.

The ELF application is completely on-line, but it takes some time to complete, and letters of recommendation are required. If you plan to apply, now is the time to get started. Wendy Asplin at the ELF Regional Recruitment Center at University of Washington says that PSU's MATESOL program has generated some of her best applicants.
