MA-TESOL

The Department of Applied Linguistics at Portland State University welcomes International students.   Currently there many International students enrolled in PSU's MA-TESOL program.

• Please note that there are two separate applications for the MATESOL program. You must fill out and submit: 

  1. a PSU International Graduate Student Application .

  2. the Dept. of Applied Linguistics MATESOL application

• The PSU International Graduate Student Application must be submitted no later than the Department deadline.

  Dept of Applied Linguistics Graduate applications are due on 01-February.

  ---

• Please note that the Dept of Applied Linguistics application requires a higher TOEFL (and it must be iBT) score than the PSU application.

  You must meet the Departmental minimum score requirement of 100 iBT to be admitted to the MATESOL program.

• If you are a non-native speaker of English and you submitted an iBT TOEFL score to gain admission to the MATESOL program, your test scores will fulfill your graduate foreign language requirement. 

  Before you graduate, you will have to submit the form: Language Requirement for Foreign Students in the MA TESOL Program.

• If you have completed your bachelor's degree at a U.S. college or university, you are not required to take the TOEFL test, but you will have to satisfy the second-language proficiency requirement using a language other than English. Please consult your adviser.

TESL Certificate

applicants

• Please contact PSU Admissions Office regarding University application deadlines.

  You must be admitted to PSU before beginning the TESL Certificate program.

  There are no Dept of Applied Linguistics admissions deadlines for the TESL Certificate.

  The TESL Certificate is not a graduate program and acceptance into the TESL Certificate program does not require acceptance into the Dept. of Applied Linguistics.

• You must submit a TESL Certificate application to the Dept of Applied Linguistics.

• After you submit the TESL Certificate application, the Dept of Applied Linguistics will assign an academic adviser assigned to you.

  The adviser must approve your course work plan.

• You will have to show proof of a 79 iBT TOEFL score (550 P-BT) before you receive the TESL Certificate.

• For information about scholarships, please contact International Education Services.

• If you have completed your bachelor's degree at a U.S. college or university, you are not required to take the TOEFL test. 

B.A.

and Minor

applicants

• You must contact PSU Admissions office regarding University application deadlines.

• There are no admissions deadlines for the Dept of Applied Linguistics.

• You must select your Major (Applied Linguistics) through PSU Admissions office.

• You must submit an iBT TOEFL score of 71 or higher (525 PBT).
