HST 399 Modern Jewish History Historical survey of Jewish experience and culture from the end of the Middle Ages to the Holocaust and creation of the State of Israel. Topics include: economic and intellectual developments in early modern Europe; the Jewish Enlightenment; religious reform; Hasidism; formations of modern Jewish culture and politics in 19th-century eastern Europe; Zionism and the State of Israel; the Holocaust; and Sephardic and Middle Eastern Jewish encounters with modernity. HST 410 History of Antisemitism This course will trace the development of antisemitism from ancient times until the present by outlining various stages in the expression of animosity toward Jews in different time periods and by diverse cultures. A variety of documents, illustrations, literature and film will be used to demonstrate how adverse relations between Jews and other groups have been influential in shaping certain aspects of western culture. HST 497/597 History of Israel through Film An historical and literary exploration of Zionism and the birth and development of the State of Israel through classic and contemporary Israeli films. We will explore the development of the State of the Jews through films from the 1920s to the present. Students will study how filmmaking reflects the Zionist ideology of the day, and reflect on the continuum of cinematographic ideology in the history of Israel. Each night consists of a film, lecture and discussion. Students will be evaluated through participation in discussion and essays on history and cinema. HST 410 Christian-Jewish Relations after the Holocaust The Holocaust had a searing impact on the Christian conscience, raising questions about the contribution of Christian theology to the mood of hate. Since that period there have been amazing changes in Jewish-Christian relations. How did these changes develop?
