<FINDING AN INTERNSHIP>

To find the right internship or volunteer work experience for you, it is important to ask yourself a few helpful questions such as, What kind of institution do you want to work with? Do you have an interest in a particular geographical area or issue area? When do you want to do with this internship? Are you willing to gain experience by volunteering alone, or are you only seeking paid internships?

Talk to other International Studies Majors who have had internships and look out for campus announcements about non-governmental organizations (NGOs), non-profits, and inter-governmental organizations (IGOs).  Use the resources available on the Working Outside the United States section on the Career Center website.  You can also visit their Resources page to find other helpful information

Once you find an internship, it is then necessary to:

  • Find a faculty sponsor (usually a regional advisor)
  • Fill out the Internship Agreement and the By-Arrangement form (signed by your faculty sponsor)
    • Return both forms to: Ari Douangpanya, Program Advisor, International Studies, 341 East Hall, Portland State University, Portland, OR 97207
  • Upon completion of your internship program, have a supervisor fill out and return the Internship Evaluation

***Please Note***

Students who are undertaking an internship abroad that they have arranged independently, and who are requesting faculty sponsorship for credit are also required to read and sign a Release and Assumption of Risk form.

IE3 GLOBAL INTERNSHIPS

Take advantage of this great opportunity to finish up your PSU degree while gaining valuable work experience in another country!  Through IE3 Global Internships you earn academic credit on your home campus while gaining professional experience abroad. Internships are available in a variety of private-sector companies, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions around the world.
