She teaches courses in comparative and American politics. Her research interests center around issues related to political economy, poverty alleviation, inequality, and women in development. Her work is qualitative and interdisciplinary, utilizing insights from economics, sociology, and anthropology to understand how the daily life of the poor shapes dispositions toward collective action and affect developmental outcomes. She has co-authored, with C. Leigh Anderson, two publications on the topic of social capital and microfinance, one of which appeared in the journal World Development and the other in a volume edited by Elinor Ostrom entitled The Commons in the New Millennium: Challenges and Adaptation.
