Fedral Direct Loan Master Promissory Note | Begin MPN e-sign now
Once you have been awarded and accept a Federal Direct Stafford loan, or if you have applied for a Federal Direct PLUS loan with Portland State and it has been approved by the Direct Loan Servicer, you will need to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for the funds to be disbursed to your Portland State student account.
The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loans and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loans. Once you sign your Direct Loan MPN, you may borrow additional Direct Loans on a single MPN for up to 10 years. You also have the option to notify the Office of Student Financial Aid if you wish to complete a new MPN for each award year. Parent PLUS loan borrowers must complete an MPN for each student.
The MPN can be electronically signed online at the U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Loan center www.studentloans.gov. To sign in, you will need your FAFSA PIN. If you do not have a copy of your PIN, you may retrieve a duplicate copy at the U.S. Department of Education PIN site www.pin.ed.gov.
The entire MPN process must be completed in a single session, so be sure you have enough time before you start. Each MPN generally takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Once you complete the MPN online, the Direct Loan Servicer automatically notifies Portland State.
