Acclaimed Environmental Historian John R. McNeill to deliver
2009 Friends of History's Endowed
Lecture during EarthWeek at PortlandStateUniversity.
The non-profit support group for the PSU History department
is presenting historan and author John R. McNeill (GeorgetownUniversity)
who will speak about "Environmental Change and the International System
Since 1900."

Just prior to the free lecture and booksigning, Dr. McNeill
will give a small talk about "Yellow Fever in the Americas" at a
catered dinner in SMC228 for which the tickets will start at $50 and all
proceeds will go to keeping all future FOH Endowed Lectures free.
Dr. McNeill is professor of history at Georgetown
University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, and author of several
books including "Something New Under the Sun: An Environmental History of
the 20th Century." The book showed how the use of natural resources at
that time, together with scientific and technological advances, had contributed
to shaping the global, social and political life throughout the 20th Century.
McNeill himself has been quoted as saying that he is
"one who tries to write history as if nature existed...environmental
historians recognize that environments change with time and they affect human
communities and in turn are affected by them in an endless co-evolution."
