“More than a Slave”
Daughter
of former slave a link to those who prevail:
Hannah
Hurdle-Toomey of Forest Grove will speak about
her father and the book she is writing that documents his
life and legacy.
*Her
book is entitled:
More Than a Slave. The Black Studies Department at Portland
State University
is sponsoring a speaker series over the next several months. Hannah Hurdle-Toomey will be speaking about a
book she is writing about her dad called
More Than a Slave. What is significant about her and the book she is
writing is her father was a former slave. Yes,
I know you started wondering how is that possible. He
was in his late 80’s when Hannah was born and he died when he was 90. Her father was born in 1845 or 1847. Birth certificates were not made for slaves. Do
the math. It works. Now she is in her 70’s. Please see the article “The daughter of a former
slave a link to those who prevailed” written in the Oregonian on January 16th,
2006 for more information.

The BLACKBAG SPEAKER SERIES 08 is organized jointly by the Black Studies
Department, the Multicultural Center at Portland
State University,
and the NAACP at PSU student chapter. In an effort to develop the Black Studies
Department as a meeting place for people and organizations doing work that
addresses issues related to the community of Black people in Portland,
throughout the academic year we invite various local organizations and
individuals to Portland State University to speak to the PSU community about
the work they do.
