Education of the University community to create and maintain an ethos of care

What is disruptive behavior?

While the University is a place where the free exchange of ideas and concepts, debate and disagreement, all classroom, behavior and discourse of campus community members should reflect the values of respect and civility. Disruptive behavior is defined as behavior that interferes with university or university-sponsored activities, including classroom activities, study, research, intellectual or creative endeavors, administration, and service or provision of communication, or emergency services.

What is distressed behavior?

Campus community members are frequently in a position to first observe signs of distress, which can include:

  • Excessive class absences
  • Sudden change in academic performance
  • Lacking emotional control
  • Excessive moodiness
  • Dramatic shifts in sleeping, self care, and/or eating habits
  • Persistent depression
  • Talking openly about suicide and/or self harm
  • Repeatedly engaging in risky behavior

If you are unsure about whether or how to intervene with a student in distress, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is this student’s behavior significantly out of the ordinary?
  • Is the behavior getting worse?
  • Does the behavior place anyone at risk?
  • Do I want to talk with someone about my observations and concerns?
  • Is this beyond my skill level?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, it is a good idea to consult with a C.A.R.E. Team Member.
