Academic Appeals

The Academic Appeals Board is an advisory committee to the Provost that hears appeals from students who claim to have received a prejudiced or capricious academic evaluation. The Board hears the appeal and makes recommendations to the Provost regarding the outcome.

The Board is composed of six faculty or staff and three students. Once students have appealed to the instructor, department chair and appropriate dean they may submit written appeals to the Office of the Dean of Student Life based on the Academic Appeals Guidelines (61K PDF).

The hearings are coordinated by the Board Chair and are conducted as follows: The student has 20 minutes to present their case and the instructor(s) have 20 minutes to present their case. The student then has 10 minutes to respond prior to the Board convening for deliberation. All supporting materials must be submitted to the Chair in advance of the hearing. The Board communicates its recommendation in writing and forwards it to everyone involved as well as the Provost. The Provost will issue a written decision regarding the appeal.
