President Wim Wiewel told faculty and staff that he is committed to a "transparent and communicative" budget process at an all-campus meeting Jan. 21. It is too early for firm reduction figures; however, Wiewel, Provost Roy Koch, and Vice President Lindsay Desrochers provided a framework and guiding principals for the budget allocation process, which are on the Web at www.pdx.edu/budget/.

"We are clearly facing unprecedented economic challenges—ones that we have not seen in the last 20 to 25 years," said Wiewel. The Oregon Legislature has begun looking at the state budget and could ask for a 5 to 25 percent reduction from state agencies in the next biennium. In addition, state economists are predicting a $600 to $700 million shortfall in this biennium.

The University Budget Team has started the planning process, said Desrochers, by meeting with campus leadership and asking managers to evaluate both expenditure reductions and revenue enhancement options.

Koch shared eight guiding principles for the budget allocation process, noting that while the principles are "necessarily broad," examples of potential actions are provided on the Web.
