PSU presidential candidate on campus this week
The first of three finalists for president of Portland State, Wim Wiewel, is scheduled for an open campus forum Wednesday, April 2, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Smith Union Ballroom, room 355. Wiewel is provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at University of Baltimore. Forums for the other two candidates are scheduled for April 8 and 9.
An open forum with Kathie Olsen is Tuesday, April 8, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Olsen is deputy director and chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation. Candidate Jon Whitmore, president of Texas Tech University, is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, from 3 to 4 p.m. All sessions are in the Smith Union Ballroom.
The State Board of Higher Education will interview candidates after the campus visits and expects to make a decision by early May. Once appointed, the new president should be on campus in late summer or early fall. For more information on the candidates, visit www.pdx.edu/president_finalists.html.
New greenhouses earn green award
The University's new Biology Research Greenhouses were recently awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The greenhouses, located south of Stott Center, are the first structures of their kind to receive this distinctive classification. read more >

Oregon Campus Compact appoints new director
Emily Gilliland was recently appointed executive director of Oregon Campus Compact housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Gilliland comes to the position from the Graduate School of Education, where she successfully developed PSU's first Certificate in Service-Learning.
Oregon Campus Compact is a statewide network of colleges and universities that engages faculty and students in community-based learning and civic engagement. U.S. presidency discussed at 'Big Idea' lecture
"Is the Presidency Over-Rated?" is the topic of a free lecture Wednesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. in the Smith Union Ballroom, room 355. The speaker is Daniel Kemmis, senior fellow at University of Montana's Center for the Rocky Mountain West. The event is part of the College of Urban and Public Affairs "What's the Big Idea?" lecture series.
Kemmis will discuss whether a healthy democracy should put so much emphasis on one particular office, or if it should spread the power more evenly between branches and across jurisdictions. Kemmis was formerly mayor of Missoula, Montana, and a former speaker and minority leader of the Montana House of Representatives.

Author to discuss New Orleans early history
As part of the PSU Library Artists and Writers Series, author and Cuban musicologist Ned Sublette will discuss his new book, The World That Made New Orleans: From Spanish Silver to Congo Square, Wednesday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in the Millar Library. Admission is free. read more >
