Students learn this from professor Christine Meadows, professional mezzo-soprano and PSU Opera Program director. President Wiewel gives mid-year update

Despite financial challenges, Portland State University is growing into a great urban research University by sticking to its values, President Wim Wiewel told students, faculty, and staff at an all-campus forum. Wiewel said in a mid-year campus update March 16 that the University is making progress toward its strategic goals by remaining committed to excellence, educational opportunity, and service to the Portland metropolitan region. New Student Rec Center gets its day

The campus community is invited to the grand opening of the new Academic and Student Recreation Center Thursday, April 1, at noon. Daylong festivities begin with an 8:30 a.m. pancake breakfast hosted by the Outdoor Program and end with a faculty/staff vs. student basketball game at 5:30 p.m. Tours of the new facility are at 1 p.m.

 

Library receives papers of longtime Oregon planner

The PSU Library Special Collections recently received the James B. Knight Papers, 29 linear feet of records, notes, correspondence, reports, and other collected materials. The collection spans Knight's career from 1974 to 2003 with the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, including his help in drafting the seminal Statewide Planning Goals. Presentation on faculty scholarship, April 8

The changing nature and expectations of faculty scholarship is the subject of a spring Carnegie Conversation, "Emergent Forms of Scholarship: What Counts in the 21st Century?" Thursday, April 8, at 3 p.m. in 238 Smith Union.

Provost Roy Koch, Associate Dean Duncan Carter, professor Steve Reder, and librarian Sarah Beasley will explore how the communication and evaluation of scholarship has changed, and what scholarship and publishing will look like in 10 years. PSU faculty certified for 2010-11 governance

The Secretary to the Faculty has determined, as specified by the PSU Faculty Constitution, that 1,198 PSU faculty are certified to participate in faculty governance for the 2010-11 year. This year's faculty headcount is up by 44 from February 2009, and will result in a 2010-11 PSU Faculty Senate roster of 117 members.

Certified faculty should expect two campus mail deliveries shortly, the Faculty Committee Service Preference Survey form and the Certified/Decline to Serve form. The former is provided for the Committee on Committees and the University administration to facilitate committee nominations for the coming year. The latter is used to assist in determining those individuals available to serve on Faculty Senate, the Advisory Committee, and the Interinstitutional Faculty Senate for the coming year. Chris Broderick joins PSU leadership

The University is proud to announce the appointment of Christopher Broderick as assistant vice president for communications and marketing at PSU. He will oversee the Office of University Communications. Broderick is the politics and education editor at The Oregonian, overseeing a team of reporters who cover politics, state government, the congressional delegation, schools, higher education, social services, and the environment. He will start at Portland State on May 3. Read more >
