Faculty to receive top honors at commencement
Linda Absher, Eileen Brennan, Grants Farr, and Dee Thompson will receive the University's top awards for excellence at Spring Commencement June 14 at 10 a.m. in the Rose Garden Arena. Richard Pimentel, motivational speaker and disability rights activist, will give the main address and receive an honorary degree. read more >
Rehabilitation Counseling rates nationally
US News and World Report named Portland State's Rehabilitation Counseling program as one of the top 25 in the country. The report, released April 29, places PSU's program 24th in a two-way tie with Florida State University. The 19-year-old Rehabilitation Counseling program resides in the Graduate School of Education's Special and Counselor Education Department, and is part of the Counselor Education master's program. read more >
School of Extended Studies relocates
To increase classroom opportunities and better facilitate departmental operations, the School of Extended Studies is relocating to the Market Square Building, 1515 SW Fifth Ave., from its current building on Park Avenue. The move will be completed on June 6. read more >
Fine and Performing Arts departments to also move
Lincoln Hall will soon close for two years as major renovations are made to the 1912 building. Music Department offices and studios will move to the Extended Studies Building on Southwest Park Ave. The Dean's Office and most of Theater Arts will move to the Market Center Building, 1600 SW Fourth Ave. (some classrooms will be in the Unitas Building, 2125 SW Fourth). Concert, opera, and theater productions will be held at The Old Church, St. Mary's Academy, and ART Second Stage.
Fall welcoming events scheduled
Dates are set for the fall events welcoming faculty and staff to campus. New Faculty Orientation is Sept. 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Convocation and Reception is Sept. 23, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.; Focus on Faculty is Sept. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Fall Symposium is Sept. 25, time is to be determined. Pre-college TRIO students earn Gates Scholarships
This spring, students from Portland State's pre-college TRIO programs were awarded six out of Portland's eight Gates Millennium Scholarships toward their educations at universities in Oregon, Arizona, and Washington. Four Upward Bound students and two Educational Talent Search: Project PLUS students earned the awards. read more >
Party for those leaving the Psychology Department
Please join the Psychology Department for a Cookie Party celebrating the contributions of Katy Burke, Cathleen Smith, and Bob Sinclair, who are retiring or going to other institutions. The party is Wednesday, June 4, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in 317 Cramer Hall. For more information, call 5-3923.
Faculty Senate runoffs completed
A runoff for 2008-09 Faculty Senate positions in Liberal Arts and Sciences and Other Instructional were recently concluded. Joining the senate are Barbara Brower, Jeffrey Gerwing, Michael Murphy, Alan MacCormack, and Fernando Sanchez. The senate will elect new officers for 2008-09 on June 2.
Summer sublets wanted for visiting professors
The Office of International Affairs is seeking furnished apartments that its visiting international faculty can rent. Faculty and staff who have "mother-in-law" apartments in their homes (with separate entrance and kitchen facilities) and would like to sublet to faculty for four or eight weeks this summer are asked to contact Anne George at ageorge@pdx.edu or 5-8596. The apartments need to be close to campus and close to bus, MAX, or streetcar lines. Rent is negotiable, but faculty are expecting to pay about $700/month.
Get a deal on summer outdoor gear rentals
The PSU Outdoor Program Equipment Center is offering a free extra week on all weekend rentals beginning June 16. Check out the rafting, camping, kayaking, and backpacking equipment options at www.pdx.edu/recreation/eq_r_c.html. The center is located on Southwest College Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
