Nobel laureate to give Vatter economics lecture
Nobel Prize winner Douglass North will give the Economics Department's Annual Harold G. Vatter Lecture Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in Hoffmann Hall. North will be speaking on "The Natural State or Why Economic Development is so Difficult to Achieve." Admission is free and open to the public; a reception will follow. read more >
PSU launches advertising campaign
Last week, the University began a new advertising campaign on major television news networks in the metropolitan area. The television spot is a 30-second version of the "bike" video shown at fall convocation. Complimentary print advertisements are appearing in the Portland Business Journal and The Oregonian. Print ads will also run through spring in Oregon Business Magazine and Portland Monthly. read more >
Campus safety forum planned for Feb. 7
The University community is invited to an open forum on campus safety Thursday, Feb. 7, from 1 to 2 p.m. in 338 Smith Union. Forum participants will consider two safety concerns: the best way to be notified in the event of a safety or security emergency, and the status of public safety officers on campus. read more >
Faculty awarded Fulbright Scholar grants
E. Kofi Agorsah, James Nash, Jennifer Helen Ruth, Scott Wells, and An "Steve" Xue have received grants to travel abroad as 2007-08 Fulbright Scholars. They were selected for their academic or professional achievement as well as demonstrated leadership in their fields. read more >
Sixth Annual Wellness Fair this week
The Sixth Annual Wellness Fair will be hosted by Campus Recreation in conjunction with Food for Thought Café, and Student Health and Counseling Thursday, Feb. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Food for Thought Café in the basement of Smith Union.
The event will focus on the Wellness Wheel Model, which balances such areas as emotional, physical, social, intellectual, environmental, and spiritual wellness. Vendors will provide free food, chair massages, and health assessments.
Candidates for chair in Judaic Studies to speak
Three candidates for the Lorry I. Lokey Chair in Judaic Studies will give free research talks in February. Leah Hochman will discuss "Reading Faces, Saving Souls: Jews, Judaism and Physiognomy in the 18th Century" today, Feb. 4, at noon in 494 Cramer Hall. Julie Lieber will give a lecture Feb. 11, and Natan Meier will talk Feb. 25. read more >
Twenty-six Vikings earn academic honors
The Big Sky Conference announced members of the 2007 Fall All-Academic teams for men's and women's cross country, football, and women's soccer and volleyball, and 26 Portland State student athletes were selected. read more >
