Iraq featured in poetry and stories at Civic Engagement event
"The Costs of War to Children and Families," an interactive multi-media presentation, is scheduled Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon in 228 Smith Union. The event features David Smith-Ferri, activist and poet laureate from Ukiah, Calif.; Zahra Al-Kabi, Iraqi social worker; and Michael Taylor, PSU social work faculty and father of an Iraq war veteran. The event, which is part of the Portland State's Civic Engagement series, will include poetry, stories and slides. Smith-Ferri has written about the people he met in Iraq and in Jordanian refugee camps, which is included in his new book, Battlefield without Borders. Light refreshments will be provided.
'Big Idea' lecture on health and land use planning
Physical and social environments influence health, yet assessment of these influences is not standard practice in land use policy and planning. Dr. Rajiv Bhatia of San Francisco's Department of Public Health is trying to change this practice. He will give the free talk "Planning for Health: Health Impact Assessments as a Tool to Make Cities More Livable" Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. in 294 Smith Union. read more >
PSU Day at Oregon Historical Society includes free lunch
Celebrating its close relationship with the University, the Oregon Historical Society has declared Tuesday, March 4, PSU Day and is offering free attendance and a catered lunch by Elephants Deli to students, staff, and faculty from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at its exhibit facility, 1200 SW Park. Space is limited to the first 150 persons who RSVP at 5-5087.
The exhibit that day is "A House Divided: Lincoln in His Own Words" and includes lectures, a special visit from Lincoln re-enactor Stephen Holgate, and guided tours offered by professors Elliott Trommald and Richard Etulain. The program is jointly sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society, Friends of History at Portland State, and the Oregon Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
Forum on Web conversion and open director position
The campus community is invited to discuss the conversion of SAGA1 to SAGA2 and the search for a new director of Web Communications at a forum Thursday, Feb. 28, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in 333 Smith Union. Scandinavian Sampler Feb. 29 and March 1
Explore Scandinavian languages and cultures at the annual Scandinavian Sampler Friday and Saturday, Feb. 29 and March 1, on campus. The event opens with the free lecture "Carl and Karin Larsson: A Creative Collaboration" Friday at 7:30 p.m. in 124 Cramer Hall. On Saturday, 20-minute lectures are planned from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 171 Cramer. Cost for the lectures is $4 all day. read more >
Get a jump on basketball tournment tickets
The men's and women's basketball teams are in hot pursuit of the Big Sky regular season championship and a chance to host the Big Sky Conference tournament. In the event that Portland State hosts, Athletics is taking pre-orders on all-session passes for both the men's and women's conference championships in Portland. Passes are $40 and available by calling 5-5627. If PSU does not host, credit card orders will not be processed. Possible Big Sky tournament dates and venues are men's on March 11-12 in the Rose Garden Arena, and women's on March 13-15 at the Stott Center.
