Partnership earns PSU sustainability leadership award

Portland-based nonprofit Sustainable Northwest has announced the 2009 winners of its annual Cecil D. Andrus Leadership Awards for Sustainability and Conservation, recognizing excellence in pursuit of sustainability from across the West. Among this year's recipients: the partnership between Portland State University and the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation. Read more > 

 

Service to remember Wendelin Mueller

The campus community is invited to a memorial service for Wendelin Mueller, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering, Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in 238 Smith Union. Dr. Mueller, who came to the University in 1973, died July 6. He was 68.

Dr. Mueller was instrumental in establishing the PSU Infrastructure Testing and Applied Research Laboratory, where he and others worked with local agencies to test the strength of full-scale structures and their components.

 

Professor takes Washington post

Professor Robert Bertini was recently sworn in as Deputy Administrator of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C., by Linda Washington, the department's Assistant Secretary for Administration.

The Research and Innovative Technology Administration coordinates the USDOT's research programs across all modes and is charged with advancing the deployment of crosscutting technologies to improve our nation's transportation system.

Bertini, a Civil and Environmental Engineering and Urban Studies and Planning faculty member since 2000, is on leave from Portland State. He was the founding director of the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium and the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory at Portland State.

 

Join Social Sustainability Network

Members of the Portland State and Portland communities can learn about and join the new PSU Social Sustainability Network at a kickoff event  Friday, Oct. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. in 485 University Center Building. RSVP to jdo@pdx.edu.

The network, led by professors Eileen Brennan, Veronica Dujon, and Jesse Dillard, brings together faculty, students, and community members to collaborate on projects and promote social sustainability. The network is supported by the Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices and the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation Grant.

 

Medical benefits fair, workshops, and computer lab sessions

Meet representatives from the health, insurance, and retirement plans, as well as wellness service representatives at the PSU Benefits Fair 2009  Thursday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Smith Union Ballroom, third floor. That same day a presentation on Standard Insurance options is offered from 11 a.m. to noon and a session on the PEBB Statewide Plan is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Both are in 338 Smith Union.

Help with online enrollment is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m. in the computer lab in 437 Neuberger Hall. For a full schedule of events, visit Human Resources' Enrollment Events Web site

 

New travel grant for sustainability

PSU's Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices has announced the first round of Miller Grant Sustainability Travel and Conference Awards. Deadline for applications is Oct. 20, and eligibility criteria and applications are the center's Web site.

The new grant program supports and recognizes the work of PSU faculty and staff in sustainability by helping to fund travel to sustainability conferences and events.  The program is made possible by the 10-year, $25 million James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation matching grant awarded to Portland State in September 2008.
