What students say about outstanding teaching

For more than a decade, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has awarded faculty the John Eliot Allen Award for outstanding teaching based on student nominations and experiences. Each year, in preparation for the awards, professor Scott Burns meets with students to hear about the impact of professors as educators, researchers, and mentors.

In a lively and interactive session, Burns will share what he has learned from hundreds of students about excellent teaching Thursday, Nov. 12, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in 236 Smith Union. Join the new Recreation Center

New Year's resolutions to get in shape could conveniently coincide with the opening of the new Academic and Student Recreation Center set for Jan. 3. Faculty and staff may take advantage of the swimming pool; three-court gymnasium; 1/11 mile, three-lane running track; and cardiovascular and weight-training rooms. Revising solutions, reviving hope

By re-engineering the decades-old malaria drug Chloroquine, PSU chemistry professor David Peyton may save millions of lives. Teams at his startup firm DesignMedix and PSU have shown the new drug's effectiveness in mice, and human trials may be only a couple of years away. Peyton's approach could have applications in curing other infectious diseases as well. Read more about outstanding PSU faculty >

 

Social Work center to celebrate 25 years

After 25 years, funding recently ended for the Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children's Mental Health in the School of Social Work. Join a panel of faculty and supporters as they share memories Thursday, Nov. 5, at 3 p.m. followed by a reception at 4:30 p.m. Both events are in the Smith Union Ballroom, third floor. First Italian exchanges made in new urban studies program

PSU has made its first exchanges with University of Bologna though a new program, Atlantis, funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the European Union. This fall, two students from Bologna are enrolled at Portland State, while two PSU students are studying there. Anna Marie Fallon, University Honors faculty, will travel to Bologna in December. Nominations for honorary degree candidates sought

The campus community is invited to nominate candidates for a PSU honorary degree to be awarded at the 2010 Spring Commencement. The University seeks nominations of individuals who have outstanding scholarship or artistic accomplishments or have performed exceptional public service. Nomination packets must be received in the President's Office, 341 Cramer Hall, by Nov. 20.
