The Tempest opens Friday

Part dream, part nightmare, The Tempest creates a world in which nothing can be taken for granted, where nothing is as it seems. Director Bill Tate and Bruce Keller, scenic and lighting designer, are planning a PSU Theater Arts production that embraces the full abundance of the play's alternately grim and beautiful illusions.

The Tempest opens Nov. 20, 7:30 p.m. at Artists Repertory Theater, 1515 SW Morrison. The evening performances continue Nov. 21, 24, 25, 27 and 28. A 2 p.m. matinee is planned for Nov. 22. Tickets are $8 for faculty and staff and available at the PSU Box Office, 5-3307 or www.boxoffice.pdx.edu.

Sending Ms. Smith to Washington—or Salem

Women comprise over half the U.S. population, yet hold only a fraction of the seats in Congress and state legislatures. That's an imbalance professor Melody Rose is addressing with NEW Leadership Oregon and Teens Lead, both housed at PSU's Center for Women, Politics, and Policy. These programs, led by diverse women experts and leaders, offer public service leadership training for women in college and high school. Read more about outstanding PSU faculty >

Soccer wins

The PSU soccer team did not advance to the NCAA Tournament but the 2009 season was one for the record books. The Vikings won their first outright Big Sky Regular Season Championship, won 10 games for only the second time in program history, and hosted the Big Sky Championship. The Viks finished Big Sky play with a 4-1-2 record and outscored their opponents 11-5 in conference play.

Head coach Laura Schott was announced as one of three recipients of this year's Big Sky's Coach of the Year Award, and students Toni Carnovale and Dolly Enneking were named to the Big Sky's All-Tournament team. It is Schott's first coach honor and PSU's latest since Tara Erickson won the distinction in 2002. Enneking is the only soccer player to be named to the All-Tournament team twice.
