Changing the science of building
Green roofs have become integral to green building practices. Yet fundamental questions about their effectiveness remain. Mechanical engineering professor Graig Spolek runs the Green Roof Design and Test Lab, where his team tests and improves green roof design. Through Spolek's research, architects and builders are learning how green roofs can save energy, reduce stormwater, and cool the urban environment. Read more about outstanding faculty >
Forum on enrollment management, March 11
The campus community is invited to discuss Enrollment Management as a Fiscal Strategy Thursday, March 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. in 238 Smith Union. Leading the forum are Jackie Balzer, vice provost for Student Affairs; Sukhwant Jhaj, University Studies director; and Provost Roy Koch. RSVP by March 3 to goldmann@pdx.edu.
This is the second forum held this term expanding on discussions begun at the Fall Symposium on the local and national fiscal context of higher education and on the recommendations for fiscal strategies proposed by the Long Term Institutional Fiscal Strategies Committee (LTIFS). Information on the Fall Symposium, "Where Have All the Dollars Gone?" and the LTIFS recommendations are available on the Office of Academic Affairs Web site.
Working in song
The hopes and aspirations of working Americans-waitresses, millworkers, corporate executives, and many others-are reflected in the songs and monologues of the musical, Working, playing at Artists Repertory Theatre, 1515 SW Morrison, March 5 through 13.
The Theater Arts Department is taking on the stage adaptation of Working, Studs Terkel's best-selling oral history. The late Terkel, a longtime writer and Chicago radio personality, wrote the book in 1974 from his interviews with regular working men and women. The musical sets their everyday lives to song, including some original scores by singer-songwriter James Taylor.
Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 7, at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the PSU Box office, 5-3307, or through TicketMaster.
Annual Scandinavian Sampler this weekend
The free talk, "Winds from Denmark: Vestas and the North American Wind Industry," kicks off the 2010 Scandinavian Sampler Friday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in 171 Cramer Hall. The following day, Scandinavian art, history, culture, and languages are explored in 12, 20-minute programs; Cost is $10 for any and all. See the schedule in the PSU Events calendar.
