Helping diverse students reach higher education

A college education has become more essential in our society, yet less accessible to low income African Americans and Latinos. Reversing that trend is education professor Michael Smith's goal. Research by Smith, a former admissions officer, has shown that the key to getting kids into college is engaging with parents early on. Stock the Oregon Food Bank larder

Barrels are located across campus for donations of non-perishable food to the Oregon Food Bank during the Governor's State Employees Food Drive. Or donate the cost of a purchased lunch today, Feb. 22, at "I'm Brown Bagging for Hunger" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 238 Smith Union. Monetary donations also may be turned in at the President's Office, 341 Cramer Hall.

Viking competes in Olympics

Former Portland State volleyball player Bree Schaaf '02 is competing for the United States women's bobsled team Feb. 23 and 24 at the Whistler Sliding Center during the Winter Olympic Games. The Bremerton, Wash., native got her start on the U.S. skeleton team in 2003. In 2007, she switched to bobsled and placed first at the 2009 U.S. National Championship and is ninth in World Cup points this season. Fans can follow Schaaf's career at breeschaaf.com.
