Teaching and learning about young adolescents
Education professor Micki Caskey says that middle schoolers are often lost in the shuffle when it comes to schooling. "They're not children, and they're not yet adults," she says, "so where do they fit in?" A former middle school teacher, Caskey is now engaged in research on practices and policies designed to make middle school as safe and enriching as possible. Read more >
Textbooks temporarily unavailable
The lower level of the Portland State Bookstore is closing for at least 10 days starting May 5 as repairs are made to the flood-damaged space. During reconstruction, textbooks will not be for sale, according to Ken Brown, bookstore president and CEO. "We would appreciate it if faculty would notify their students of this, so there are as few interruptions to academics as possible," said Brown. Read more >
New mentoring research center opens
Charting innovative directions in the research and practice of mentoring is the goal of the new Center for Interdisciplinary Mentoring Research (CIMR) directed by Thomas Keller, Campbell Professor in the School of Social Work (pictured here). The center, located on the ninth floor of the Market Center Building, will bring together faculty from Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Business Administration, and Engineering and Computer Science.
Funding for CIMR was recently announced by the PSU Office of Research and Sponsored Projects. The center, which is sponsored by Academic Affairs, is partially funded through the Enhancing our Institutions Investment in Research Initiative. CIMR will coordinate research across multiple domains of mentoring, including youth development, higher education, and workplace mentoring.
Call for University Studies portfolio reviewers
University Studies is seeking faculty and graduate assistants to assist with its annual review of student portfolios on June 16 (focus on critical thinking) and June 17 (focus on ethics and social responsibility) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To sign up or for more information, contact Rowanna Carpenter at unsteval@pdx.edu or 5-3445.
Faculty on nine-month contracts will be paid $25 per hour. Graduate students will be paid $12 per hour. Faculty who are on 12-month contracts will be reimbursed by their departments or programs. Lunch will be provided.
Listening to community to advance social sustainability
Community is the theme of two talks for the Social Sustainability Colloquium on April 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. in 660 Academic and Student Recreation Center. Dave Hall, Psychology adjunct faculty, will discuss "A Call Home: Rediscovering ourselves through restoration of community and place." Aimee Samara Krouskop (pictured here) of Global Insight Arts will present "Community Wisdomology and Institutional Listening: A Model for social sustainability." Read more >
Join colleagues and students in breast cancer walk
Campus Rec is putting together a faculty, staff, and student team for the Making Strides For Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, May 8, at 9:30 a.m. The goal is to raise $500 or more for the American Cancer Society by walking together in the 2- to 4-mile non-competitive walk. To sign up or just to donate, go to the Walk's Web site and select PSU Campus Rec as your team. The deadline to sign up and be part of the Campus Rec team is Monday, May 3, at 5 p.m.
