PSU presidential candidates on campus this week
The final two candidates for president of Portland State, Kathie Olsen and Jon Whitmore, are on campus this week. Olsen, deputy director and chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation, is scheduled for an open forum Tuesday, April 8, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Whitmore, president of Texas Tech University, is here Wednesday, April 9, from 3 to 4 p.m. Both sessions are in the Smith Union Ballroom. read more >
Richard Pimentel named Spring Commencement speaker
Richard Pimentel, a former Portland State student, an architect of the American with Disabilities Act, and a successful trainer and motivational speaker on diversity issues has accepted the University's invitation to deliver the Spring 2008 Commencement address and will receive an honorary degree, Saturday, June 14. read more >
Students employees honored next week
Portland State is celebrating National Student Employment Week, April 14-18, culminating in a reception for student employees and their supervisors Wednesday, April 16, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Smith Union Parkway North. The PSU Student Employee of the Year will be named, as well as four honorable mentions. read more >
Faculty research teams selected to represent PSU
Two faculty teams were recently selected to submit proposals to the National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program. According to the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects this marks a new system for selecting PSU applicants when the number of proposals that can be submitted to a funder are limited. read more >
Jews in 21st century America topic of Solomon lecture
The Harold Schnitzer Family Judaic Studies Program at Portland State presents the third annual Gus and Libby Solomon Lecture Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in the Native American Student and Community Center. Alan Mintz, a expert on Jewish literary scholarship, will discuss "Owning Our Culture: How Jews Can Thrive in 21st-Century America." read more >
Play gives close-up look at mother and daughter bonds
Julie Akers, Theater Arts faculty, directs the funny, moving play, Memory House, April 11 through 19 at the Studio Theater, 115 Lincoln Hall. It is the story of a mother and her college-bound daughter as they grapple one evening with past issues and their future separation. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. on April 11-13, 17-19, and at 2 pm. on April 14. Admission is $5 general and $3 students at the door.
