Her teaching interests include environmental psychology, housing and environments for the elderly, urban stress, and urban social networks. Her books have centered on informal helping networks and how they relate to the formal service system, and on the impact on employees of caring for children, disabled adults, and elders. She collaborated with Deborah Howe in developing a curriculum and materials to educate urban planners about the challenges of an aging society.
