Noyce Inquiry and Application Process
We currently have several $20,000 scholarships available for students entering the summer 2012 GTEP cohort. If you are planning to teach science, contact the Noyce Program Coordinator, Stephanie Wagner (503-725-8345 or stwagner@pdx.edu), to learn about this great opportunity!
This advising checklist is provided to assist students and advisors who are interested in the Portland State University (PSU) Robert Noyce Teacher Scholars Program.
Initial exploratory phase:
- Read the Noyce program description.
- Read the Graduate Teacher Education program description on the Graduate School of Education website.
- Schedule a meeting with Stephanie Wagner to discuss requirements and program information (stwagner@pdx.edu or by phone at 503-725-8345).
- If you are interested in the secondary education program, schedule a meeting with a Secondary Education Advisor to review transcripts and complete a Departmental Recommendation Form

- Bring the following materials when you meet with the endorsement advisor:
- Unofficial transcripts

- Attend a GTEP Open Advising Session and submit the email confirmation of attendance as part of your Noyce application materials. For a current schedule of sessions, go to www.pdx.edu/education.
- Following the Open Advising Session, if you need to meet individually with a Graduate School of Education Noyce Program Liaison, please contact Dr. Liza Finkel at efinkel@pdx.edu to schedule an appointment.
Noyce Program Application Requirements:
- Have minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 from completed undergraduate or graduate degrees with strong performance in math and science coursework;
- Hold at least an undergraduate degree in the sciences, engineering, technology or mathematics or have sufficient coursework to be the equivalent to a General Science in the Liberal Arts degree (see the current PSU bulletin for the General Science in the Liberal Arts degree course list)
- GRE scores
Masters in Science Teaching in General Science prerequisite coursework

- Stat 244

Please visit the GTEP admissions website at http://www.pdx.edu/ci/gtep-admissions to find the pre-requisites for the authorization level you a seeking The “authorization level” refers to the grade level you are seeking to teach.
Please consult with the GTEP advisor about which entrance exams to take prior to your application.

There are three components to the Noyce Scholar Program application process: The University Application for Graduate Admission, the Noyce Scholar Application, and the Graduate Teacher Application Program application.
1. University Graduate Admissions

Official GRE scores sent to campus code 4610 directly from Educational Testing Service
Educational Career Essay
Essays should include topics listed in the Education Career Essay prompts found on-line in the GTEP application. Essays will be reviewed in terms of the fit between your professional interests and proficiencies and the Noyce Scholarship Program, and your ability to communicate. Print the essay and include it in your Noyce/MST packet.
Letters of Recommendation
No additional letters of recommendation required, GTEP will supply copies of letters of recommendation to the CSE

Educational Career Essay

Letters of Recommendation
Solicit three (3) letters of recommendation (cover sheets with instructions included in the Noyce Scholar Program Application must be attached):
- One or two letters from an educator who have directly observed you working with children or youth in a formal or informal setting, for pay or as a volunteer; and
- One or two letters from instructor(s) of an upper division course at the college/university level who can speak to your academic strengths and qualifications
