The greatest gift we can give to multicultural students is teachers who understand them. Just ask Julie Esparza Brown.
Julie Esparza Brown, EdD, directs Portland State University's Bilingual Teacher Pathway (BTP) program, filling our growing need for teachers who can engage the widest possible range of students, and help them meet state and national standards. In partnership with 19 local school districts, the program recruits bilingual/bicultural instructional assistants already working in the school districts. Their backgrounds and experiences make them excellent role models who can bridge their students' cultural and language differences. Modeled after BTP, Dr. Esparza Brown also co-directs the Pathways program for Culturally Responsive Early Intervention, Early CHildhood Special Education and the BiSped program for Bilingual/Bicultural Special Education teachers. Her research interests include nondiscriminatory assessment, RTI for ELL students, and the instruction of ELL students with special needs.
