Masks

two PSU students studying together

Effective March 19, 2022, Portland State no longer requires that masks be worn in classrooms, offices, and most other public and private indoor spaces. The Centers for Disease Control and Multnomah County Public Health recommend that anyone recovering from COVID-19 wears a mask through day 10 and that anyone exposed to COVID-19 wears a mask around others for 10 days from the date of exposure as well.

A limited number of on-campus settings still require masks:

Some PSU programs — for example, externships and practicums — are held in locations off-campus that may continue to require masks after the PSU requirement lifts. Please follow the mask rules in place in those locations.

As we shift into the next phase of our response to COVID-19, we understand that some in our community may feel more comfortable continuing to wear a mask. That is a personal decision that we wholeheartedly support. We ask that our community respect the choice of colleagues and students who keep their masks on. We also respectfully request that faculty, staff and students refrain from asking students or colleagues to wear a mask.

Disposable masks will continue to be available at building entrances. Departments can continue to request cloth masks or KN95 masks for staff, and students can pick up KN95 masks at locations across campus.

Departments may request reusable cloth or clear masks or KN95 respirators for employees and/or a box of disposable surgical masks to distribute to visitors or students. The COVID Mask & Sanitizer Distribution Policy and Procedure includes details on the types of masks available.

Students may pick up a KN95 mask at the Info Hub in Smith Memorial Student Union, Chemistry Stockroom in the Science Research and Teaching Center, the information desk in Montgomery Residence Hall and the main housing office in room 210 of Broadway Residence Hall.

Clear masks are available for instructors to request and for students through the Disability Resource Center.
