Research Interests

Dr. Luo’s research focuses on physical and analytical chemistry of organic compounds in water and atmosphere.  He has a particular interest in the fate and transport of organic contaminants in environment; the chemical processes involved in the formation of air pollution and the atmospheric transformations of organic compounds; the chemistry of tobacco and tobacco smoke; measurement of volatile organic compounds emission from industrial activities, consumer products, and biogenic sources; and characterization of diesel, biodiesel, and their combustion emission. Dr. Luo has over 20 years experience on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and other instrumentation. He joined Portland State University in 2008.  Dr. Luo also operates the Center for Separation Science & Mass Spectrometry (CSSMS) at Portland State University.  The CSSMS provides analytical services for the analysis of air, water, industrial hygiene, consumer products, and biological samples for PSU faculty and student as well as external customers.
