For the fourth year in a row, Portland State University’s curriculum is among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report.
The magazine’s “America’s Best Colleges 2006,” on newsstands this Monday, features Portland State under the section “Choosing a School: Programs to Look For” in five categories: Internships/Co-Ops, Senior Capstone, First-Year Experiences, Learning Communities and Service Learning.
This is the fourth year that U.S. News’ Best Colleges issue has listed schools with “outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success.” U.S. News asked education experts from groups such as the Association of American Colleges and Universities to identify program categories, and then asked college presidents, chief academic officers and deans of admission to nominate up to ten schools for each category, with those listed most often making the list.
Portland State University is known nationally for a curriculum focused on connecting the campus to the metro community, providing students and faculty members opportunities to engage with organizations and industry throughout the area and enhancing both the quality of education and quality of life in the region. Other schools acknowledged along with Portland State include Duke, Evergreen State College, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Yale and the University of North Carolina.
“At Portland State University, we believe that academic success is enhanced when students develop strong connections with the institution and that learning is enhanced when student projects require the application of disciplinary knowledge as part of an interdisciplinary team addressing real-world problems. In turn, we know that these educational activities enrich our communities,” said Provost Roy Koch. “For over 10 years, we have integrated these ideas into the curriculum, and it is heartening to learn that our efforts to enhance student success and learning are again recognized by U.S. News & World Report where we are ranked among the top universities in the nation in five of the ‘Programs to Look For’ categories.”
