PSU's Stott Center gymnasium was crammed with posters, presentations, and nervous but exuberant young researchers at the 20th annual Intel Northwest Science Expo. And at the end of the day, some of those students packed up their displays with a little extra baggage: scholarships, grants and even a chance to compete against the world's best in Cleveland, Ohio next month.

Over 600 students in grades 5-12 came from as far as John Day, Gold Beach, Grants Pass and Vancouver to present research on topics ranging from whether gum-chewing affects short term memory and the effects of tooth-whitening on teeth, to advanced watershed analysis and computer science. Over 200 scientists from universities, government agencies and industry helped judge the competition.

This year's Best of Fair winners were among the 300 awards presented in a ceremony Friday evening. High school winners earn an expenses-paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Cleveland, Ohio, May 11-17, 2003; winners choosing to attend PSU are offered Oregon Laurels full-tuition scholarships. Best of Fair Alternates may travel to the ISEF at their own expense to observe. Middle school category winners are nominated to compete in a national competition sponsored by Discover Communications, Inc.

A complete list of all scholarship and category winners, by school or municipality, will be available on or after Tuesday, April 8, 2003; contact David Santen at santend@pdx.edu or 503-725-8789 for more information or explanations.

Next year, Portland, Ore., will host the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair - the world's largest pre-college celebration of science bringing together more than 1,200 students from 40 nations to compete for scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize: a trip to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Stockholm, Sweden. The 2004 ISEF, sponsored by Applied Materials, will be held May 9-15, 2004, at the Oregon Convention Center and other facilities in Portland, and is expected to attract over 5,000 visitors and $8 million in revenue to the region. The NWSE is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge. NWSE is a scientific research competition for Oregon and SW Washington students, and is sponsored by Intel, the Center for Science Education at PSU, Vernier Software and Technology, Youth Exploring Science, and many others. The mission of the Intel Northwest Science Expo (NWSE) is to develop scientific talent and promote science literacy in Oregon and SW Washington students, as well as to inspire students to consider science, engineering and math careers.
