Portland State University has received $500,000 for the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

"The generosity of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will make it possible for the College of Engineering and Computer Science to meet the demands of the region and provide access to a high quality engineering education," said PSU President Daniel O. Bernstine. "This gift, together with other gifts from visionary leaders along with support from city, state and national agencies, sends a signal to the community that an investment in PSU not only benefits the regional economy, but creates opportunities for future generations."

The Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology will serve as the new home to PSU's College of Engineering and Computer Science, furthering the College's longstanding commitment to make quality technology and engineering education accessible throughout the community. This grant will be used to support the construction of a 130,000 square-foot tower providing the College of Engineering and Computer Science with 47 new state-of-the-art classrooms/laboratories, a center for student services and expanded facilities for Oregon MESA (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement). Oregon MESA helps underrepresented middle and high school students succeed in math, engineering and science in preparation for a college education.

Located in the heart of Oregon's Silicon Forest, the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University is uniquely positioned to deliver progressive engineering education. By teaming with regional industry and government, the College's faculty members keep the curriculum current and prepare PSU students to make an immediate contribution to the workforce through participation in capstone design projects, internships and research opportunities.

During the 2002-03 academic year, the College had a total enrollment of 1,964 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. During this time period, the College also experienced significant growth in research and faculty-research grew 19 percent over the previous year and faculty positions grew from 55 to 72 over the last two years. Additionally, the College has added a number of teaching and research labs, including the Integrated Circuits Design and Test Laboratory, the only one of its kind at an American college or university, and the Intel Microcomputer Engineering Laboratory, giving students access to software and machines that will better prepare them for careers in the high-tech field.

The Northwest Center will house a growing number of collaborative programs involving PSU, Oregon Health & Science University and other institutions, making it a regional research center. The Center will also facilitate opportunities for recent graduates and experienced engineers to work side-by-side in lifelong learning activities, support direct collaborations with industry and provide space for laboratories that meet industry specifications for research in emerging high technology and engineering areas.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is dedicated to improving people's lives by sharing advances in health and learning with the global community. Led by Bill Gates' father, William H. Gates, Sr. and Patty Stonesifer, the Seattle-based foundation has an endowment of approximately $25 billion.
