Since announcing the public phase of a $100 million capital campaign on October 6, 2004, Portland State University has received almost $3 million in new private support, bringing the total amount raised through January 31, 2004 to over $77 million.

The comprehensive "Building Our Future" campaign seeks $100 million in private investment to support more than 75 priorities across the University in research, teaching, scholarships and new construction.

"The first four months of the public phase of the campaign has gone extremely well," said Cassie McVeety, vice president for University Relations. "With over 2,800 new gifts in the door, we feel we are on the road to successfully completing PSU's first-ever campaign. There are still many opportunities for our alumni and friends to participate in the Campaign and I look forward to working with them on advancing Portland State."

Highlights include:
* Over $714,000 received from William and Joyce Furman in support of both the Campbell Professorship in Mentoring in the Graduate School of Social Work, helping to complete the needed funds to establish the Campbell Professorship, and the James DePreist Visiting Professorship in Ethnic Art in the School of Fine and Performing Arts;
* $140,000 from Gerding/Edlen Development Company, LLC to the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology;
* A $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor for the Eugene F. Mallove Endowment, which supports new energy research and the work of professor emeritus John Dash;
* $75,000 in gifts from Henry and Janice Schuette for the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology and for Portland State;
* Over $90,000 received from Intel in support of the Northwest Science Expo, the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology and the School of Business Administration;
* Over $50,000 from the estate of Frank G. Brandt for the Viking Athletic Fund;
* A $50,000 gift from Qwest for a Tribal Leadership Forum;
* A $40,000 grant from The Boeing Company to support teacher education in the areas of math and science; and
* The recently established David Weisenburg Memorial Scholarship, honoring the Oregon National Guardsman and PSU student killed in October, 2004 in Iraq, has received more than 90 gifts totaling over $42,471.

The Building our Future campaign has contributed to much of the recent growth on campus, including capital projects such as the Native American Student and Community Center, the naming of the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology now under construction. The campaign has also helped to improve and upgrade research facilities and equipment, and endowed professorships and programs designed to attract and retain top faculty members, such as the James DePreist Visiting Professorship in Ethnic Art, Center for Professional Integrity and Accountability and the Center for Japanese Studies. In 2003-2004, nearly 1,500 scholarships supported by the Building Our Future campaign were awarded to Portland State students.
