Vertical growing system construction in progress

The Shattuck Hall Architecture Studio is a beautiful work space, but who wants to work inside when the sun is shining? Students from the Department of Architecture are getting the chance to work outdoors and test their green thumbs as they construct the PSU Ecological Learning Plaza this summer. The terrace to the east of Shattuck Hall is now a testing ground for vertical growing systems that will improve habitat, provide strategic shading, and improve water quality.  The structures are being built now, and planting will follow in Fall 2011.

The project, coordinated by Assistant Professor Jeff Schnabel, is funded by METRO and the Coalition of Students Interested in Eco-districts  (COSIE).  The design of the green walls is being led by Nevue Ngan Landscape Architects in partnership with the PSU Green Building Research Lab and the Department of Architecture. The plaza, located at the corner of SW Broadway and College, is fully accessible to the public to view the tests and enjoy the other amenities planned for the space.
