Advising FAQs

I don't know if I'm ready for calculus yet. How do I figure out which math course is right for me?
The Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science advising staff can help you decide which math level is appropriate for your background. Generally, if you have not taken any pre-calculus or trigonometry, or if your high school or college math courses are more than a few years old, you should start with lower math levels such as Introduction to College Mathematics, Math 111.

Does the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science offer scholarships to entering freshmen and transfer students?
Yes, and upper division students also may apply for scholarships funded by generous donors to the college. To apply, print the scholarship application form and turn it in prior to the March 1 deadline.

I'm a transfer student. Do I have to take all of the PSU freshmen and sophomore inquiry courses?
It depends on the number of credits you are transferring and what your major will be. All students must accumulate a minimum of 39 credits of university studies courses and/or arts and letter/social sciences courses at their previous college and/or PSU prior to graduation. Twelve of these credits must be upper division cluster courses taken at PSU.

Transfer students who have not taken Freshman Inquiry must have completed SP 100 (or the equivalent) and WR 121 as part of the 39 credits of arts and letters/social science. Most psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, geography, and humanities credits can be applied to the general education requirements.

If you are majoring in computer science, your total number of transfer credits will determine which inquiry class, if any, you need to take. At a minimum, the 12-credit junior/senior cluster must be taken at PSU. The advising staff in the Dean's Office can help you through this process.

I may want to major in engineering, or I may want to major in another field. How can I decide?
Take some introductory engineering or computer science courses to help make that decision. Good courses to try within the Maseeh College include ECE 171-Digital Circuits, CS 161-Introduction to Programming, or EAS 101-Engineering Problem Solving. If you enjoy these courses, and are doing well in the required calculus and physics courses, you have a good chance for success in an engineering or computer science major.

How can I get credit for the technical courses I took through the military?
Apply to PSU through regular admissions procedures, and also contact the PSU Veteran's Services office at 503-725-3876. Veteran's Services will work with you to coordinate evaluation of your military courses for possible credit at PSU.

When do I apply for admission to the upper division program in the departments?
Apply for admission to the department upper division programs the quarter before you will have completed the lower division core curriculum (shaded classes on blue sheet) with grades of C or better, have a total of 90 credits or above, and have a minimum GPA of at least 2.25. Departmental admission forms are available on the departmental Web pages.

Which of my previous college credits will transfer to PSU?
The PSU admissions office decides which courses will be accepted. Upon admission to the University, you will receive a transfer credit evaluation from the admissions office. If you have any questions about your transfer credit evaluation, seek help from the Maseeh College Dean's Office advising staff. A petition process is available to request special review of transfer credits by the appropriate engineering department.
