Joan began working at PSU in September 1999 as coordinator of the newly created Community College Relations (CCR) office. She came to PSU after working for three years as an academic adviser at Clackamas Community College. She has also taught ABE/GED, developmental math, and college level writing courses. Prior to working in higher education, Joan spent ten years working for small printing companies doing pre-press production.

As a first generation student, Joan understands the hurdles students face trying to complete their education. During most of her academic career, she worked part or full-time while going to school full-time. Like most PSU students, Joan transferred to PSU after attending both Clackamas Community College and Portland Community College. And, like most students, she changed her major multiple times before she graduated.

Joan and her staff of liaison-advisers work closely with the local community colleges to help students transition to the university. They assist students participating in the co-admission programs and do general academic advising.
