For Parents

Your student is in college, perhaps living away from home for the first time. S/he will likely experience a great deal of personal, emotional, academic, and intellectual growth while at Portland State University (PSU). Your student will be busy making new friends and going to class, studying, taking tests, and writing papers — and if your student is like 80 percent of PSU students, s/he will also be working while attending school.

Getting work experience is great. It provides not only income but opportunities to develop and enhance the skills needed to succeed in full-time, professional-level careers. It also allows your student to 'try out' various career areas prior to completing her/his college degree.

But between school, family / friends, and employment, it's no surprise that career planning may not be first and foremost on your student's mind. That's why the PSU Career Center is asking your help. We would like you to encourage your student to use the Career Center's services and resources when:

  • Seeking part-time student jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Trying to decide on a major.
  • Selecting a career path.
  • Searching for full-time professional-level employment.
  • Preparing for graduate or professional school.
