Student Leaders for Service- The internationally recognized Student Leaders for Service (SLS) program is designed to intentionally build students' leadership capacity and civic engagement skills by serving and learning with non-profit and community organizations in the Portland metropolitan region.
MLK Day of Service- In January 2010, 1,300 students from 11 Portland colleges and universities made history by coming together for the first time to honor Dr. Martin Luther King through service. In 2011, our celebration will be even bigger. Join President Wiewel and students from across Portland for a rally at PSU followed by service projects at organizations across the city. Transportation, lunch, and t-shirts will be provided. REGISTER HERE. For more information, or to join the leadership team planning the day, email Emily Hoffer at ehoffer@pdx.edu
Alternative Spring Break- Starting in 2010, Student Leaders for Service has participated in Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge, to plan a series of week-long service projects along the west coast. This year, project sites include Bellingham, WA; San Francisco, CA; and Grass Valley, CA. A one day project in Portland is also scheduled. All events will take place during the week of March 20, 2011.
Global Youth Service Week- Each April, Portland State University students participate in a week of Earth Day projects and volunteer opportunities. Sites include local K-12 schools, parks, and the PSO campus. Sign up for a two hour slot or join us for the whole week! Visit the Student Leaders for Service site for more details.
Viking Days- Each year in September, Viking Days offers service opportunities designed to help new students make friends, explore Portland, and get involved! The New Student Service Day event for 2010 was a Saturday construction project with Habitat for Humanity.
