Strategies to Incorporate CBL
Civic Engagement:
Battistoni, R.M. (2002). Civic engagement across the curriculum: A resource book for service-learning faculty in all disciplines. Providence, RI: Campus Compact.
This resource book offers faculty in all disciplines, rationales and resources for connecting their service-learning efforts to the broader goals of civic engagement. This volume provides concrete examples of course materials, exercises, and assignments that can be used in service-learning courses to develop students' civic capacities regardless of disciplinary area. (Campus Compact)
Service-learning:
Cress, C.M., Collier, P.J., & Reitenaeur, V.L. (2005). Learning through serving: A student guidebook for service-learning across the disciplines. Sterling, VA: Stylus Publishing.
This book defines and describes important service-learning concepts, but most significantly it will engage you in activities designed to develop key competencies for an effective community experience. The exercises will hone your skills of reflection, teamwork, cultural competence, planning, leadership, and change management. You will also discover how to assess progress and results and how to document your achievements so you can confidently communicate them to all stakeholders- information that is equally important for your grade and for building your portfolio. Gottlieb, K., & Robinson, G. (Eds.). (2002). A practical guide for integrative civic responsibility into the curriculum. Washington, DC: Community College Press.
This
guide resulted from a recognition that an intentional civic responsibility
component was missing from many service learning initiatives; as a result, American
Association of Community Colleges elected six colleges from around the country
to participate in a pilot project whose purpose was to identify service learning
strategies to boost civic engagement and foster civic responsibility among
community college students. The following guide details the course-based strategies
employed by these six institutions. (Adapted from Preface)

"The critical component of successful service-learning programs is 'reflection.' Reflection describes the process of deriving meaning and knowledge from experience and occurs before, during, and after a service-learning project. Effective reflection engages both teachers and students in a thoughtful and thought-provoking process that consciously connects learning with experience. It is the use of critical thinking skills to prepare for and learn from service experiences." - National Service-Learning Clearinghouse
