Profile

Swapna Mukhopadhyay, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Portland State University. Born and raised in Calcutta (Kolkata), Dr. Mukhopadhyay is a mathematics educator focusing on issues of critical mathematics education and cultural diversity. The main thrust of her work is in realizing that mathematics is a socially constructed mental tool that is accessible to all. In her formulation, Ethnomathematics as a discipline provides an intellectual space for future research and designing curriculum, an act that is synonymous to activism. She received her PhD from Syracuse University and has been at Portland State University for the past few years. Her research interests stress the equity and access of education in general and mathematics education in particular. She also subscribes to Ethnomathematics as a discipline that integrates people's cultural and social history in describing human activities that incorporate mathematical thinking.
