Exhibition Statement
This video presents a personal documentation of the last Venice Biennale. Without commentaries, and using only the moving images and the local sounds to guide us through this art maze, I want you to walk with me, look around and think: What is art? When is art? How is art? Is this art? Who is whom and what is what?

The Venice Biennale is one of the ‘oldest’ venues, where every other year, ‘contemporary’ arts are brought together. The City of Venice sincerely embraces this event and art is everywhere. You have the two main Venice Biennale venues: “Giardini” (the Venice gardens, where the main national pavilions are established), “Arsenale” (the old Arsenale docks, where the main group exhibitions are installed) and then of course many other citywide exhibitions. Last year, with 83 artists invited to the main exhibition, 89 national pavilions and 37 collateral events participating, and half a million visitors later, the Biennale.54 was the largest ever. Many of the artists were presented under the cold curatorial eye of Bice Curiger, the Swiss curator of the 2011 Biennale. If nothing else, it was the place to see what is happening in the arts NOW. Combine that with the perennial beauty of Venice and you’ll have a great dialog about what is ‘contemporary’ and how easily it turns into ‘history’. “ILLUMINATIONS” was the name of the whole exhibition, so you can imagine the scope, the dare and the failure of it all! “ILLUMINATIONS”? Beautiful, let’s try this every other year! And if we fail “to illuminate” it now, so be it… It’s not the first time… As it is with the “contemporary”, there is always going to be a next time…

This video is also intended as a tool of research for our art courses, as an alternative to the usual but sometimes dry power point presentations, so please feel free to invite your classes for a viewing! In less then an hour you will be seeing a substantial segment of our contemporary arts, selected and compiled as a broad documentation, but also as a personal way of experiencing it.

This video is presented in conjunction with the “MADE IN ITALY” exhibition in the MK Gallery.
