Elisabeth (Lis) Charman received an MFA in Graphic Design from CalArts and is associate professor and coordinator of the Graphic Design program. Lis's work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally receiving recognition from AIGA, ACD, Art Directors Club of NY, and How magazine. She is a recipient of Sappi's Ideas That Matter grant for her work for p:ear (program: education, art, recreation for homeless and transitional youth).
Committed to community-based learning (CBL) Lis's CBL courses focus on community-based design and design for social change. Her students have researched and designed for regional and local concerns including homeless youth population; sustainable food systems; microbusinesses and underserved entrepreneurs; Tualatin watershed research, restoration and maintenance; our region's high tech industry's evolution; at risk and underprivileged youth and families; documentary, independent and women filmmakers; sexual assault; and abused immigrants and immigrant rights. Professor Charman has disseminated scholarship related to community-based learning through national conferences, public talks and published articles and chapters.
