How to Apply

Applications to the Anthropology Graduate Program must be made through the Graduate School; please do not send any application materials directly to the Anthropology Department.

Applications for the Fall 2024 term will be available in late October 2023.

Important Dates & Deadlines

Feb. 1: All application documents must be uploaded by 11:59 p.m. Applications received after the Feb. 1 deadline, or for alternative term admission will not be reviewed, except in extenuating circumstance and by special request from the faculty member the student intends to work with.

April 1: Applicants will be notified of their admission results no later than April 1.

Prior Coursework

The Master’s program has been designed for students who hold an undergraduate degree in anthropology or its equivalent in coursework.

If you do not have an undergraduate degree in anthropology, you may still apply but we will ask that you take some undergraduate courses to bring you up to speed in any subfield with which you are not yet familiar. Your chance of admission increases if you have already taken some or all of the remediating courses mentioned below, or courses like them, at another institution.

  • Anth 304: Social Theory or Anth 305: Culture Theory
  • Anth 350: Archaeological Method and Theory
  • Anth 370: Paleoanthropology or Anth 372: Human Variability

Courses in related disciplines may also serve. For example, if you have a BS in Biology, we are unlikely to ask you to take background classes in Physical Anthropology, and if you have a BA in Sociology, we are unlikely to ask you to take background classes in Socio-Cultural Anthropology. We prefer that your background courses be at the 300 (junior) or 400 (senior) level.

UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:

To be considered for regular admission, applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or the equivalent (on the U.S. 4.0 scale). • 500-word "Statement of Intent"

  • GRE (optional)

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

Identify Potential Advisor

Graduate students in our program work closely with their advisor.  As you prepare your application, contact tenure-track faculty that share your interests and with whom you wish to work. Set up interviews (virtual or in-person) with prospective advisors to discuss common interests.

    Select Track

Select which of the three tracks you would like to pursue:

    • Internship Track: You'd complete a supervised internship at a partner organization, and write a thesis that combines an internship deliverable to the organization and a final internship reflection paper. This track prepares students for work as a practicing anthropologist.
    • Skills Track: You'd complete a curriculum tailored to their career objectives as an applied anthropologist. In your final quarter, you'll take comprehensive exams and submit a portfolio documenting the skills you've obtained during the program.
    • Thesis Track: You'd conduct original research in an area of special interest and write a thesis based on this data. This track is excellent preparation for doctoral programs.

    Start Your Application

If you are ready to start your graduate application, login or create a new account in the application portal. Use this same link to access an existing application and to check your admission status.

    Submit Transcripts

While submitting your Graduate Application online, you will be required to upload scanned copies of your transcripts from all community colleges, colleges and universities you have attended, regardless of the number of credits earned. If you are offered admission, you will be required to submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended as the final verification step after enrolling in your program.

    Submit GRE Scores (Optional)

The submission – or non-submission – of GRE scores will not negatively impact whether an applicant is admitted to our master’s degree program.

    Submit TOEFL Scores (if applicable)

Proof of English proficiency is required by submitting minimum required official scores on the International Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System-Academic (IELTS) exam, or the Pearson Test of English-Academic (PTE) less than two years old at time of matriculation.

    Write Statement of Intent

Write a 500-word essay that summarizes your academic background and your main goals in attending graduate school and our program in particular. It should note which track you seek and the faculty with whom you wish to work. Explain why your interests mesh well with our program.

    Submit Writing Sample

Submit a writing sample that illustrates your academic skills and interests, and ability to craft a sustained argument supported by scholarly data.

    Identify Recommenders

Provide the names and emails for three individuals who will provide letters of recommendation. Referees will receive automated notifications to submit letters electronically.
