Out-of-State Student Resources

Prospective students and their families often find that there are many questions to ask about going to a school outside of their home state. We hope to outline some points of the admissions process that out-of-state students may find particularly useful. Specifically, we would like you to know about campus visit programs, scholarships, and the admission process.

If you would like to contact the specific admissions counselor for your state, please visit our counselor contact list.

Visiting Campus

We offer several different types of visits to Portland State, and you can find more information about each program we offer by checking our campus visit web page. Additionally, you may also be interested to know more about the City of Portland.

After You've Been Accepted

Orientation is one of the best services available to you to assist you with your transition to the Portland State community. Orientation will be where you can connect with current Portland State students, faculty, and professional academic advisers who can help you make a smooth transition. Because we recognize that it can be difficult to attend an orientation at PSU as an out-of-state student before you are able to move to the Portland area, we always offer out-of-state student orientations shortly before the beginning of the term.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

We encourage students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during January of their senior year in high school. The FAFSA allows us to process students' financial aid awards, and determine eligibility for need-based scholarships.

One of the principal ways that out-of-state students offset the higher cost of out-of-state tuition is with scholarships. We offer a range of scholarships specifically designed to meet the needs of out of state students, which you can view on the Out-of-State and WUE webpage.

Living at PSU

Once students are admitted to Portland State University, they are eligible for our student housing, including the First Year Experience (FYE). FYE is designed to make things easier for new students by building a support network of peers and providing a nurturing environment with all the necessary resources. Students starting classes in Fall 2008 are encouraged to complete the housing application by June 1, 2008. University Housing assignments are based on the date the application is received. Move-in for first-year students will occur on September 15th, which allows students a few weeks to get adjusted to their new surroundings before the beginning of classes.

Further Resources for Students and Family

PSU has a large number of student services available to help make your college career a successful one. You will be introduced to many of these student services at orientation.

We encourage you to read our student and family resource guide on the Orientation website to begin examining some of the many services that are available to you at a PSU student.
